The CalSolarResearch website provides information about the California Solar Initiative (CSI) Research, Development, Demonstration, and Deployment (RD&D) Program activities, including the program’s history and current CSI RD&D solicitations. Please check back regularly for updates!
The CSI RD&D Program will be hosting three final project webinars in December. These webinars are the culmination of the projects and walk through the entire process and present final results achieved. Please register at the link provided after each description to reserve a spot.
BIRAenergy, in partnership with GE and SDG&E, demonstrated a low cost "plug and play" roof-mounted photovoltaic (PV) system for asphalt-shingle roofs. The project found that timing the install of PV with re-roofing or deep energy efficiency retrofits resulted in cost efficiencies due to partnering among the various trades and related process efficiencies in a plug and play PV kit. The project team developed an installation best practice guide, cost analysis and business model to help bring the installed cost of PV to under $4.50/W in the single family residential retrofit market, without the benefit of volume installs. The project demonstrated the plug and play PV kit install at six different homes in Southern California, one of which was retrofitted to be ZNE and includes storage. This CSI RD&D webinar will provide a summary of the project along with key results and findings.

SolarCity and partners University of California, Berkeley and Tesla Motors developed a consumer product that integrates energy storage and PV to firm the PV output and provide backup power. This project also includes analysis that examined PV variability, identified optimal control strategies for storage, and determined potential tariff structures to incentivize storage. This research is particularly pertinent today with the recent CPUC mandate for 1.3 GW of energy storage to be added to the grid. This CSI RD&D webinar will provide a summary of the project along with key results and findings.

The National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), along with partners Southern California Edison, Clean Power Research, and Electrical Distribution Design will present an overview of work done under their CSI RD&D grant. This project addressed many of the issues with integrating high levels of PV into the electrical distribution system by examining the issues, developing solutions, and testing some of those solutions in the field. To understand the impact of new PV installations on the distribution grid, the project team conducting modeling and simulation, laboratory testing, and field demonstrations of the effect of high penetrations of PV on electrical distribution systems. The webinar will summarize the research and present results and key findings.
